The Catastrophic County Poor Relief Program allows counties to pool their resources into a central fund to provide relief to counties faced with paying catastrophic medical expenses involving county poor relief recipients. A catastrophic medical expense is one which exceeds $20,000 during a consecutive 12-month period.
Eligibility
To be eligible for reimbursement under this program, an individual must be eligible for county poor relief.
Eligibility for county poor relief is determined at the county level and is based on state law and the county's guidelines. To apply, please contact his or her county auditor’s office. The auditor will either take the individual’s application for assistance or refer the individual to the county welfare director.
A county is considered the payer of last resort. An individual who qualifies for other assistance programs must first use those other payment sources. Other payment sources include programs such as Indian Health Services, Veterans Administration, Supplemental Security Income, Medicare and Medical Assistance.
