For years, South Dakotans with disabilities and various disability organizations throughout the state have recognized a need for developing recycling services medical equipment. Tons of medical equipment end up in landfills each year, much of which could be recycled and reused. In an effort to address the problem of unused or underutilized durable medical equipment and to serve people who otherwise would not have access to needed or appropriate equipment, Easter Seals South Dakota is working with the state to establish the Easter Seals Recycle for Life Program.
Many people living with physical challenges do not have the financial resources to get wheelchairs and other medical equipment they need. At the same time there are many used and "broken" wheelchairs, crutches, canes, walkers and other devices that could be re-used by people in need.
