Project 8

What is Project 8?

Project 8 is South Dakota's goal to keep kids safe by making sure they are in the best child seat for their height and weight, until they are at least 8 years old. At 8 years, most can safely wear a seat belt because they are taller than 4'9" and weigh more than 80 pounds.

Where can I go to have my child’s safety seat inspected?

To learn how you can keep your kids safe with Project 8 or if you qualify for a child seat, contact a Project 8 program in your region.

Do I qualify for a free child safety seat?

Project 8 distributes infant, toddler and booster seats to income eligible families across South Dakota. Those interested in receiving a seat must show proof of financial need, such as Medicaid, WIC, or CHIP, child care assistance or Head Start enrollment to receive each seat. Learn more.

Should my child use a booster seat?

All children who have outgrown infant or convertible child seats should be properly restrained in booster seats until they are at least 8 years old, meet weight limit of booster seat or are 4' 9".
