Continuing Education

Continuing Education (CEU) is required for all licensees. Continuing Education is reported to the Board in even-numbered years during the online renewal process.

In a two-year cycle, 40 hours of continuing education are required. Four of those hours must be about ethics as it relates to counseling. Board Approved Supervisors must also complete four hours of continuing education in the subject of supervision. The number of continuing education hours required is prorated based on the initial date of licensure. Please refer to the chart below for the number of hours required depending on your initial date of licensure. ARSD 20:68:07:24.  Approved continuing education programs. The board will accept qualified continuing education programs accredited, approved, or presented by the following organizations or the organization's state affiliate:

  1. American Association of Christian Counselors
  2. American Association of Marriage and Family Therapists;
  3. American Association of Social Workers;
  4. American Medical Association;
  5. American Psychological Association;
  6. Commission on Rehabilitation Counselor Certification;
  7. Joint Commission for Accreditation of Health Care Organizations;
  8. National Board for Certified Counselors;
  9. South Dakota Association of Addiction and Prevention Professionals;
  10. South Dakota Board of Addiction and Prevention Professionals;
  11. South Dakota Board of Examiners for Psychologists;
  12. South Dakota Board of Social Work Examiners;
  13. South Dakota Corrections Association;
  14. South Dakota Counseling Association;
  15. South Dakota Department of Health;
  16. South Dakota Department of Human Services;
  17. South Dakota Department of Social Services; and
  18. The state licensing board for counselors of another state.

The Board may approve other qualified continuing education programs upon request. A licensee seeking approval of a continuing education program may apply on a form approved by the board.

For continuing education not provided by one of the sponsors listed above, please submit a request for approval of continuing education. The requests may be submitted by individual licensees or program sponsors.
