Transitional Medical Benefits
The Department of Social Services may provide up to 12 months of additional transitional medical benefits to former low-income medical recipients. South Dakota families who are no longer eligible for Medical Assistance for Low-Income Families (LIF) because of employment or child support received by a member of the household may receive additional Medical Assistance.
Medical Eligibility
- The family must have received Medical Assistance for Low-Income Families
for at least three of the previous six months before going off the program.
- The family's monthly countable income must be at or below 185 percent of the
Federal Poverty Guideline.
- A child who is 18 is not eligible for Transitional Medical Benefits unless they
are a full-time student in high school and will graduate before they turn 19.
Covered Services
Eligible families are entitled to full Medical Assistance coverage. Covered services include:
- doctor appointments,
- hospital stays,
- dental and vision services,
- prescription drugs,
- rehab/therapy,
- chiropractic services
