Eligibility for Medicaid, Food Stamps, Child Care
Assistance and TANF Not Impacted by the
Federal Economic Stimulus Package

PIERRE, S.D. –The Department of Social Services wants those receiving Medicaid, Food Stamps, Child Care Assistance, or Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) benefits to know that the economic stimulus check they receive from the federal government will not be counted as income as long as they spend it within three months of receipt of payment.

The IRS has a wealth of information available on their website to help individuals and families better understand what they qualify for and instructions on how to fill out the 1040 or 1040A forms; which those who do not file for a federal tax return must fill out to receive. The Department of Social Services also has these forms available in the local offices throughout the state.
