South Dakota Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) is a temporary public assistance work program administered by the Department of Social Services and the Department of Labor and Regulation.
It is designed to provide temporary assistance and economic self-sufficiency for children and families.
TANF is a needs-based program for families with children under age 18 (or under age 19 if the child is in high school) who need financial support because of:
Families with serious financial needs may qualify for TANF monthly payments. Your TANF payment is based on who lives with your family, who is eligible in your household, and other income and resources available to your family. If your family's monthly TANF payment is less than $10, no payment will be issued.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING TANF PAYMENTS
TANF payments will be received electronically. Recipients may choose to have their payments deposited directly into their checking or savings account, or they may choose to receive the U.S. Bank ReliaCard.
The State of South Dakota and U.S. Bank have partnered to provide the ReliaCard Visa Prepaid Debit Card to all recipients of TANF benefits. The ReliaCard provides a fast, secure and efficient method of distributing TANF payments. It also gives the recipient a convenient and safe way to access their money. Individuals will be given the option of having their funds directly deposited into a checking or savings account. If they do not choose direct deposit, they will automatically be sent a U.S. Bank ReliaCard Visa onto which their future payments will be deposited.
TANF ReliaCards will be restricted from use in certain businesses and establishments per the Middle Class Tax Relief and Job Creation Act of 2012 Public Law 112-96. Specifically, the TANF ReliaCard will not be accepted in places of business whose exclusive or primary business is as a liquor store, casino, gaming establishment or provider of adult oriented entertainment. These restrictions do not include businesses such as grocery stores and gas stations whose primary purpose is selling groceries or gas but also sell liquor or operate as a casino or gaming establishment.
