November is Adoption Awareness Month

PIERRE, S.D.The South Dakota Department of Social Services (DSS) will emphasize the critical need for adoptive parents during the month of November. To help recruit and retain adoptive parents for children who are waiting for forever homes, Gov. Dennis Daugaard has proclaimed November as Adoption Awareness Month.

“In South Dakota there is continually a need for adoptive parents, which includes relatives of the child who are willing to provide a warm and loving home,” said Gov. Dennis Daugaard. “No matter the circumstances, adoption is a selfless act.”

Since July 1, 2012, 213 children in South Dakota were adopted through the Department of Social Services; several other adoptions also took place through independent and private agencies throughout the state.

These children range widely in age and may have physical or emotional challenges, developmental disabilities or are part of sibling groups, who all need a place to call home. It is a DSS priority to place children in homes that will be able to provide for their individual needs.

“Linda and I have seen the effects of child abuse and neglect first hand through our work with Children’s Home Society. These children need someone to open their hearts and their homes and provide them with unconditional love and care,” Gov. Daugaard stated.

The Department of Social Services offers services to adoptive families to help them meet the unique needs of the children adopted through the department. For more information, visit
