Hospice services are covered by South Dakota Medical Assistance (SDMA) in order to provide end-of life care to terminally ill SDMA recipients. Recipients desiring hospice care must be certified as terminally ill and they must elect hospice care. Services then covered by SDMA are those which ease the end of life.
In order to be covered by SDMA, Hospice services must be provided by licensed hospice providers. A recipient may live in a home or a long-term care facility while receiving hospice services.
