Recipient Information

Durable Medical Equipment (DME)

South Dakota Medical Assistance (SDMA) covers reusable medical equipment that is medically necessary and complies with set service limits. For example, only one nebulizer every 5 years is allowable per family and hearing aids may be provided only after a minimum of 3 years has elapsed since the original fitting AND the original hearing aids are no longer serviceable.

In many cases, DME must prior-authorized. Your SDMA provider is responsible for prescribing, ordering and prior-authorizing medically necessary DME.

Non-covered DME includes: exercise equipment, protective outerwear; protective outerwear; personal comfort or environmental control equipment such as air conditioners, humidifiers, dehumidifiers, heaters or furnaces.

For recipients residing in nursing homes, DME other than hearing aids is provided by the nursing home.

For specific questions, please discuss with your SDMA provider. If more assistance is needed, please contact the Division of Medical Services using Contact Us, selecting Prior Authorization for the Topic and Durable Medical Equipment for the Sub Topic.
