Continuing Professional Training

Continuing Education (CEU) is required for all licensees (CAC, CPS, LAC). Continuing Education is reported to the Board in odd-numbered years during the renewal period.

In a two-year cycle, 40 hours of continuing education are required. Four of those hours must be in the subject of ethics. The number of continuing education hours required is prorated based on the initial date of licensure/certification. Please refer to the chart below for the number of hours required depending on your initial date of licensure/certification. If you are unsure of your initial issue date, please visit the verification page or contact the Board’s office.

Approval of Continuing Education:

ARSD 20:80:08:19 Approved continuing education programs. The board will accept qualified continuing education programs accredited, approved, or presented by the following organizations or the organization’s state affiliate:

  1. Addiction Technology Transfer Center;
  2. American Association of Christian Counselors;
  3. American Association of Marriage and Family Therapists;
  4. American Association of Social Workers;
  5. American Counseling Association;
  6. American Medical Association;
  7. American Psychological Association;
  8. Center for the Application of Prevention Technology;
  9. Commission on Rehabilitation Counselor Certification;
  10. Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation;
  11. International Certification & Reciprocity Consortium;
  12. Joint Commission for Accreditation of Health Care Organizations;
  13. National Alliance of Mental Illness;
  14. National Association for Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Counselors;
  15. National Association of Social Workers;
  16. National Board for Certified Counselors;
  17. National Certification Commission for Addiction Professionals;
  18. South Dakota Board of Examiners for Counselors and Marriage and Family Therapists;
  19. South Dakota Board of Examiners for Psychologists;
  20. South Dakota Board of Social Work Examiners;
  21. South Dakota Corrections Association;
  22. South Dakota Council of Community Behavioral Health;
  23. South Dakota Counseling Association;
  24. South Dakota Department of Corrections;
  25. South Dakota Department of Health;
  26. South Dakota Department of Human Services;
  27. South Dakota Department of Social Services;
  28. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration; and
  29. The state licensing board for addiction or prevention counselors of another state.

The Board may approve other qualified continuing education programs upon request. A licensee seeking approval of a continuing education program may apply on a form approved by the Board.

For continuing education not provided by one of the sponsors listed above, please submit a request for approval of continuing education. The requests may be submitted by individual licensees or program sponsors.
