Recovery and Benefit Fraud

The intent of program benefits, such as Medicaid, is to provide assistance to South Dakotans when the benefits are not available elsewhere or the other benefits have not met all of an individual’s needs.

The Office of Recoveries and Fraud Investigations seeks reimbursement when the state has issued payment for benefits that were obtained inappropriately or when another party was responsible for issuing payment.

This may include, but is not limited to:

• Private health insurance
• Insurance settlements due to an injury or accident
• Repayment of costs for benefits that were obtained inappropriately

It is very important for individuals receiving benefits through the Department of Social Services to complete any paperwork thoroughly and accurately. If you know of an individual receiving program benefits when another party should be responsible or when an individual has received some money that they haven’t reported to us, please let us know:
