Renewal Information

CAC, CPS, and LAC Renewal Information

During the 2023 South Dakota Legislative Session, changes were made to the renewal process for certified addiction counselors, licensed addiction counselors, and certified prevention specialists. Licensee renewal (CAC, CPS, and LAC) will now occur every two years in odd years, beginning October 1, 2023. Fees have been adjusted to reflect the new biennial renewal. For a list of renewal fees, please refer to the Fee Schedule.

There is no continuing education due in 2023. Moving forward, 40 hours of continuing education will be due during renewal for all licensees (CAC, CPS, LAC). Continuing education will be prorated based on your initial date of licensure or certification – for more information on continuing education, please visit the Continuing Professional Training page on the Board’s website.

Please refer to the Online Renewal Links below to access the online renewals. Paper forms are available. Please note that submitting a paper renewal form may cause a delay in the processing of your renewal. Prior to logging into the online renewal system, ensure you have your certificate number and a valid credit or debit card available. Credit or debit card payments are only available through online renewal.

*Dual credential licensees (CAC/CPS or LAC/CPS) may renew online but must contact the Board’s office prior to doing so.

Inactivate a CAC, CPS, or LAC

Licensees may inactivate their LAC, CAC, or CPS during the renewal period. An inactivate certificate or license expires four years after the date of issuance. A practitioner may apply to reactivate their license or certificate at any time within the four-year inactive period. To reactivate a license or certificate, the practitioner must apply, pay the required renewal fee, and provide proof of at least forty hours of continuing education in the two-year period immediately preceding the application.

Trainee Renewal Information

Addiction Counselor Trainees (ACT) and Prevention Specialist Trainees (PST) must renew their Trainee Recognition status annually with the Board. Trainee status is issued for one year from the date of issuance and may be renewed four times, for a total of five years as a trainee. Requirements for certification for licensure must be completed within a trainee’s five-year end date.
