Board of Examiners for Counselors & Marriage and Family Therapists License Renewal

License Renewal - Now Open

The online renewal system opens on October 1st and closes at midnight on November 30th. You must renew your license by November 30, 2026 or your license will automatically expire. Please read the Frequently Asked Questions about renewal prior to starting your renewal.

Please review this page in its entirety prior to starting your renewal.

Before starting your renewal, you must have the following items ready to complete your renewal:

1. Your name as it appears on your license
1. If you are unsure, please check on the website here: sdboardofcounselors.org/verify/
2. Your birthdate
3. The last four of your social security number
4. A credit or debit card
1. The online system accepts Visa, Mastercard, Discover, or American Express cards
5. Your continuing education requirements
1. Date of training, title of training, sponsor of training, type of training (general or ethics), and number of hours
2. If you aren’t sure how many hours you need, please refer to our Continuing Education page.
6. Read the renewal Frequently Asked Questions.

To complete the renewal of your license online:

1. Click on “Renew License”
2. Enter your last name, your date of birth and last four of your SSN
3. Complete the Renewal Form
1. Refer to the Frequently Asked Questions if any questions arise
4. Submit the renewal fee of $225 for each license you are renewing
5. Confirmation of your renewal and receipt will be sent to the email address provided during the renewal process

To complete the renewal of your Board Approved Supervisor status online:

1. Click on “Renew Board Approved Supervisor Status”
2. Enter your last name, your date of birth and the last four of your SSN
3. Complete the Renewal Form
1. You can find information related to Continuing Education:
2. Please have the date of training, title of training, sponsor of training, and the number of hours
4. There is no renewal fee for board approved supervisor status
5. Confirmation of your renewal will appear at the end and your valid through date will be updated
